I have always loved maths and tutoring. My passion for both really took off when I started tutoring classmates in high school (back in the US). I was incredibly lucky to have such amazing, motivational teachers back then. One of them inspired me so much that I decided to take an advanced exam that wasn't taught in my school, so I had to teach it to myself on my own. It was the Advanced Placement 'Calculus BC' exam, which overlaps substantially with A-level Further Maths in the UK. My high grades on this and the US university entrance exams (SATs) enabled me to skip the first year of maths at a top US university (Berkeley) as a result.
While I was there I had a part-time job at the university tutoring centre, teaching university maths to individuals and small groups (3-5 students). It was the first work I truly cared about. It played to my strengths and really suited me as a person. I found it incredibly rewarding and a great way to solidify my own knowledge, expand my teaching skills, and learn more about people in general. It also led me to take on maths students of different levels and abilities.
After emigrating to the UK where I am now a citizen, I continued to tutor on the side, mainly at university level. I went on to earn a First Class law degree (LLB) and completed my MSc in computer science (earning a Distinction). I completed both of these degrees part-time in the evening at Birkbeck College (University of London) while working in tech.
With the demands of family life, I eventually needed a career change - something with more flexible hours than being a software engineer could offer me. When I thought about what I would actually enjoy doing next, the choice seemed completely obvious: make a career out of what I knew I'd always liked most, which was tutoring students.
Today, I feel very lucky to be able to do this. I am so proud of my students and thrilled whenever I get to help them out in a subject I really enjoy. On that note, maths and computer science will always be my two big passions to geek out on, and I would love to hear from you if you ever need help with either of them!
